SUMMARY:Séminaire Ko Okumura
DESCRIPTION:\nOchanomizu University, Japan\n\n\n\nOn the bubble breakup in confined geometries\n\n\n\nFormation of a fluid drop has been extensively studied as a typical caseof the singular dynamics widely observed in nature. The singulardynamics is often self-similar: shape at different times collapsing on amaster curve after rescaling. The self-similar dynamics has beencategorized as either universal or non-universal: the master curve isindependent from or dependent on the length scales that set the initialboundary conditions, as if memory is erased or retained. In thepreviously known cases, where the axismmetry is maintained, only asingle length scale is available for the boundary conditions, a tuberadius, and, thus, there is no possibility of partial memory. Here, weconfined the system to break the axismmetry to introduce three lengthscales, revealing a third category of incomplete universality: themaster curve is dependent on the smallest scale but independent on theother two scales. Affecting of only the smallest length scale on themaster curve underscores the importance of scale separation for theemergence of universality: near the singularity physics at small scalesbecomes important. We also discuss the continuous generation of bubblesin a different confined geometry, in which Tate’s law for the breakupcondition, expressing a capillary-gravity balance, is violated due toviscosity. All results are convincingly shown by clear experimental data.\n
