SUMMARY:Manuel BIBES : Oxide spintronics
DESCRIPTION:\nTransition metal oxides, particularly those with a perovskite structure, exhibit an extraordinary diversity of electronic and magnetic properties, often strongly tunable by external stimuli. This makes them a particularly rich playground for spintronics, which aims to exploit the electron spin to store, process and transmit information. In this seminar, I will give a broad overview of how oxides have contributed to the development of spintronics and continue to open new directions. I will first discuss manganites, whose half-metallic ferromagnetism provides highly spin-polarized currents, and multiferroic materials, which enable the control of magnetism by electric fields. I will then turn to oxide interfaces hosting two-dimensional electron gases, where strong spin-orbit coupling allows the efficient interconversion between charge and spin currents through the Edelstein effects. Finally, I will show how combining these functionalities with ferroelectricity provides a route towards nonvolatile electrical control of spin-charge interconversion, opening perspectives for ultralow-power memory and logic devices.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBiographie :Manuel Bibes is a CNRS Research Director at the Laboratoire Albert Fert Fert (CNRS, Thales, Université Paris-Saclay) in Palaiseau, France. After engineering studies at INSA Toulouse (1998) and a double PhD degree in France and Spain with a thesis on manganite interfaces (ICMAB Barcelona, 2001) he became a CNRS Researcher in 2003. Bibes has pioneered research lines on multiferroics, ferroelectric tunnel junctions and explored novel routes for the electrical control of magnetism, spin-charge interconversion and spin transport in oxide architectures. Bibes is the laureate of three ERC grants and a Highly Cited Researcher. He has received several awards including the Descartes-Huygens Prize in 2017, the EuroPhysics Prize in 2022 and the CNRS Silver Medal in 2025. In October 2024, he co-founded the start-up NELLOW that develops and aims to commercialize ultralow power chips for AI and logic based on quantum oxide materials.\n
