Mesoporous silica – a look into its formation and how we can modify the material properties.

Mesoporous silica materials form in a cooperative self-assembly process with amphiphilic molecules acting as “templates”. As these molecules are removed the porosity is created. Several synthesis systems can be used to form a wide range of materials. Focusing on a system with non-ionic amphiphiles, we have used a number of techniques to investigate the formation events, such as cryo-TEM and SAXS, and shown that targeting some of these events provides means to control material characteristics.
