Active participation of LPS researchers to the International Year of Crystallography

In the framework of the event “2014, International Year of Crystallography”, several researchers from the LPS and other laboratories of the Paris-Sud University have been very active in popularizing this scientific field which is not well-known despite its high importance in many scientific areas. The same crystallography principles are indeed used by physicists, chemists, biologists, mathematicians, geophysicists, mineralogists, planetologists, and many others, and provide answers to fundamental questions, thereby pushing the boundaries of knowledge about the matter that surround us in the universe.

A few researchers from the LPS (Laboratory of Solid State Physics), from the ICMMO (Institute of Molecular Chemistry and Materials of Orsay) and from the LEBS (Enzymology and Structural Biology Laboratory) have organized many events all around the Paris region. In particular, they have visited around 15 classes of secondary schools to meet with pupils and talk to them about crystallography, through oral presentations and using a few experimental setups. The latter are used to illustrate how the physical properties of materials are related to their structure and how researchers get the structural information using for instance x-ray diffraction.

Finally, these researchers have taken part in the local organization of a national-level crystal growth contest. The awards presentation took place on May 21st at the LPS. More information concerning the activities related to the International Year of Crystallography in the Paris area is available on the dedicated website www.cristallo2014.u-psud.fr as well as pictures, videos, quizzes etc.
