Playing with trapped gas species or elasticity to arrest coarsening in foams - Sylvie Cohen-Addad

Solid foams are cellular materials constituted of a dense packing of gas cells in a solid matrix that can be made of a variety of materials including metals, glass, ceramics or (bio-)polymers. They inherit their structure from precursor liquid foams. Thus, designing solid foams with specific structure, permeability and mechanical properties requires a control of the ageing processes during the course of solidification. We will see how liquid foams can be stabilized by an insoluble trapped gas species and gelation of their continuous phase. By studying the ageing of ordered foams we have identified the underlying physical mechanisms of stabilization and we propose a simple scaling model that predicts their stability diagram [1].
