Emilie Tisserond was awarded the 2017 L’Oréal-UNESCO Fellowship for Women in Science

Emilie Tisserond, a PhD student at the LPS in the team Electronic Correlations and High Pressure, is one of the recipients of the 2017 L’Oréal-UNESCO Fellowship for Women in Science.

The l’Oréal-UNESCO Fellowship for Women in Science are awards offered each year by a partnership between L’Oréal Foundation, the French Académie des Sciences, and the french National Commission for the UNESCO, to thirty young women working in science at the doctoral and post-doctoral level (€15000 for PhD students and €20000 for post-docs), with the aim of promoting and supporting young women at a crucial moment in their research career. This year, Emilie Tisserond is among the thirty recipients that were selected from more than 1000 candidates by an independent jury of academic researchers, with the goal of recognising the excellence of their academic work, the originality of their scientific projects, and also their passion for communicating and promoting science to the younger audiences. 

In her PhD work, Émilie Tisserond studies, experimentally and theoretically, the electronic transport in the quantum regime in a material with Dirac cones : the α-(BEDT-TTF)2I3 (written αI3 below) under high pressure (P>1.5 GPa). In contrast with the purely bi-dimensional case of Graphene on SiO2, the three-dimensional lamellar structure of αI3 allows studying the physics closer to the Dirac point. However, the coexistence of massive fermions and Dirac fermions in the organic metal αI3 makes the physics particularly complex but also rich and surprising. The Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations (semi-classical magnetoresistance oscillations) in αI3 under high pressures, very low temperatures and strong magnetic fields (around 2GPa, 200 mK and 14T) reveal anomalies. Indeed, if the periodic behaviour in 1/B of these oscillations at low magnetic field is well known and understood, this is not the case of the deviation to this behaviour which appears at higher magnetic fields (B> 7 T). This particular type of behaviour has been very recently observed on surface states of 3D topological insulators, but the effect is larger in the αI3.

Émilie Tisserond is passionate about the transmission of scientific knowledge. This is why she, in parallel with her research work, teaches courses to medicine and fundamental physics students, and is involved in the Young Researchers Commission of the French Society of Physics. As part of her 2017 L’Oréal-UNESCO Fellowship for Women in Science, she will work in middle and high schools to promote scientific careers, especially to young girls.
