Watching Ink Dry - Colin Bain

Department of Chemistry, Durham University, UK

Inkjet printing is flexible digital technology for patterning functional materials onto surfaces. Functionality depends on morphology of deposits and there is a world-wide effort to understand how to control the way in which materials are deposited when a drop of a functional ink dries on a surface. This talk will describe three projects in my group at Durham aimed at understanding and controlling the deposition of particles from evaporating droplets.
(i) Use of a sol-gel transition to overcome the coffee-ring effect
(ii) Particle migration during drying
(iii) Creation of complex functionality from simple inks
