    Quantum Entangled Fractional Topology

    Résumé : Topology is an essential feature of quantum matter. A canonical example - the Chern insulator - has protected chiral edge modes related to a Chern number that is integer-valued. This same number describes the global response of a spin-1/2 particle to a magnetic field. As a result, such spin-1/2 models can be used to describe topological Bloch bands in lattice Hamiltonians.
    I will introduce models of interacting spin-1/2’s that reveal a new class of topological states with rational-valued Chern numbers for each spin as a result of quantum entanglement. A driving protocol in time reveals the stability of these fractional topological numbers towards various forms of interactions in the adiabatic limit. Finally, I will elucidate the correspondence between the fractional topological spin response and bilayer semimetals on a honeycomb lattice with a nodal ring at one Dirac point.
