Suresh Vishnu NARAYANAN – Quantization of Faraday Rotation in a 2D electron gas
’Université de Sherbrooke, Canada
Faraday rotation is the phenomenon by which the polarization of a linearly polarized electromagnetic wave gets rotated by matter in the presence of a magnetic field. In a 2D electron gas, Hall and Faraday effects are direct consequences of the Lorentz force acting on the charge carriers. The quantization of Hall conductance at high field effect should thus lead to a quantization of the Faraday angle of rotation.
We have observed this quantization on a GaAs/AlGaAs 2D electron gas at ultra-low temperature in the microwave regime. In agreement with theory, we find that the quantum of angle is given by the fine structure constant, which in our experiment is renormalized since we work in a waveguide and not in free space
