Wiebke Drenckhan – Interactions between aqueous foams and oil (vapours): from the cleaning of art pieces to enhanced foam stability

Institut Charles Sadron, CNRS UPR22 – Université de Strasbourg

The interaction between oils and aqueous foams is commonly known to be detrimental for the foam. However, by wisely matching the properties of the oil (or its vapour) and the foam, a range of physical effects can be exploited to create intriguing synergies – some of which remain to be elucidated. Here I will discuss two examples of such synergies. In the first case, foam physics provides mechanisms for the highly efficient cleaning of historic art pieces with “oily” surfaces. In the second case, oil vapours are shown to lead to a surprising increase in the stability of foam films against rupture – and therefore to an enhanced foam stability.
