Mohamed Nawfal Ghazzal – Structured TiO2 material for enhanced light harvesting and photocatalytic activity

Learning from the complex nature’s photosynthesis process and leaf’s architecture, it appears, in a simplified picture, that light-harvesting, photogeneration of charge carriers, and their lifetime combined with the surface photocatalyst reactivity are among the key challenges driving the efficient conversion of solar energy to chemical fuel. Improving the photocatalytic efficiency of a photocatalytic material requires: i) an increase in the lifetime of the photogenerated charges carriers, ii) broadening the spectrum of absorption response and enhancing the ability to absorb photons (light harvesting properties), and iii) an increase in the surface reactivity. In this presentation, variable strategies will be discussed to improve the photocatalytic efficiency of a model TiO2 photocatalyst toward H2 generation. These strategies are centered on a common objective: increasing their quantum yield, surface reactivity, and charge carriers separation to reach improved photocatalytic efficiency. The first part focused on designing different architectures that enhance the light harvesting of TiO2 in the nano- and mesoscale.1,2 Then, the ideal configuration of the photocatalyst will be discussed, invoking the “strong metal-support interaction” concept as an effective way to improve photocatalytic efficiency.3 Finally, the new junction with TiO2 photocatalyst will be exposed to show that the “H-Graphdiyne” can efficiently increase the charge carrier separation and hydrogen generation.4,5
