The stain left by a coffee drop on a hair
Researchers have studied the dynamics of particles contained in a droplet when it evaporates on a fiber. The deposit resulting from the drying on a fiber differs remarkably from the …
The LPS welcomes students and researchers from Ukraine, who wish to continue their activities in the framework of the research topics we develop. The French government implements a program of emergency assistance for scientists in exile (Pause – Solidarité Ukraine). The LPS will provide all the necessary conditions for the realization of scientific projects within the framework of this program.
Both experimental and theoretical studies are concerned with quantum and strongly interacting systems. Coupling lattice, spin, charge and orbital interactions leads to unique properties of new materials, which are regularly discovered.
These research fields lie at the border between physical chemistry and biology where the large number of interactions give rise to cooperative phenomena and complex macroscopic behaviour (liquid crystals, surfactants, foams, colloids, confined DNA, viruses, membranes, living matter…).
Saint-Gobain PhD award
Susana Marín-Aguilar has been awarded the Saint-Gobain Prize of the French Physical Society. The importance of the research topic, the quality and originality of the results obtained and the clarity of the presentation are the main criteria to distinguish the winners.
SFN 2021 PhD award
He has been awarded the 2021 thesis prize of the French Neutron Society (SFN) for his work on water confined in geo-inspired nanotubes and the development of an original method for visualizing and assigning vibration modes. This prize rewards a quality PhD work for which the contribution of neutron scattering is decisive.
PhOM 2021 PhD award
She is the recipient of the Physics of Waves and Matter (PhOM) prize for her work on the friction of liquid foams on rough surfaces. This distinction, awarded by the Graduate School of Physics of the University of Paris Saclay, recognizes the originality and excellence of theses carried out in one of the PhOM laboratories.
CNRS bronze medal 2021
The bronze medal rewards initial research that has established a researcher as a specialist in their field. This distinction is a form of encouragement to pursue research that is already well underway and proving successful.

The Laboratoire de Physique des Solides (Laboratory of Solid-State Physics; LPS) is a joint research unit (UMR 8502) between the Université Paris-Saclay and CNRS. It is mainly affiliated to the CNRS Institute of Physics and the 28th section of the National Council of Universities.
(more…)The Laboratoire de Physique des Solides was established by André Guinier, Jacques Friedel and Raimond Castaing at the start of the university year 1959, in the Orsay campus. The latter had been acquired in 1955 by the Ministry of National Education.
